Protecting Company Canal with Homegrown Innovation
Company Canal is getting stronger, thanks to a Louisiana-made solution that blends natural systems with cutting-edge design. This project is a living shoreline—a nature-based approach to protecting our coastlines while supporting the ecosystems and communities that depend on them.

What Is a Living Shoreline?
A living shoreline uses natural elements like marsh grasses, oyster shells, and water-friendly infrastructure to protect against erosion and flooding. Unlike concrete seawalls or rock barriers, living shorelines work with nature, not against it. They help clean the water, create habitat for wildlife, and absorb the energy from storms and waves.

What Are ExoForms™?
At the heart of this project are custom-made concrete structures called ExoForms™, nicknamed Cajun Coral. These blocks were designed and made in Louisiana to do more than just sit on the shoreline.
• They calm wave energy and slow erosion.
• They create safe spaces for oysters, fish, and marsh grasses to grow.
• They trap sediment and help rebuild the shoreline
• They are made with sustainability in mind.

Why This Matters
Louisiana’s coastlines are changing fast. Erosion, sea level rise, and stronger storms threaten our communities and the places we love. But projects like this show how local innovation can create solutions that protect both people and nature.
This living shoreline was made possible by partnerships between Louisiana scientists, engineers, nonprofits, and community leaders—all working together to build a more resilient future.

Partners in Progress
This project is a collaboration between some of Louisiana’s leading organizations in resilience and restoration. Together, they’re turning innovative ideas into real-world impact.
Nature and technology are shaping a stronger shoreline—right here at home.
