A Freshwater First for North Carolina

Lake Norman is the largest man-made lake in the Carolinas, and most of its shoreline is private. Public fishing access is scarce, which makes the places where anglers can reach the water matter even more. For two decades, the North Carolina Wildlife Federation, with assistance from the NCWF Lake Norman Wildlife chapter, has built fish habitat across the lake. This project is the next step: the first freshwater use of Natrx FishHouse modules, installed on Tuesday, July 21, 2026 at two public fishing destinations so the whole community benefits from better habitat.

Public Water, Cherished Lake

The Lake Norman State Park pier and Beatty's Ford Access are two of the few spots on the lake open to every angler. Concentrating advanced habitat where the public already fishes turns a private lake into shared opportunity, and puts the results where people can see and use them.

A First in Freshwater

Natrx has brought engineered habitat to coastal, estuarine, and freshwater projects across the country. Lake Norman is the FishHouse's first freshwater home, and Natrx's first in North Carolina. The same engineered complexity that supports saltwater fisheries is now working for the bass and crappie of a Carolina reservoir.

Habitat-Positive by Design

Each module is engineered with internal voids, layered textures, and multi-scale rugosity that support the whole food web, from the biofilms and algae at the base to the gamefish on top. The design gives every life stage a place to feed, hide, and grow.

Structure That Keeps Working

Natural cover in reservoirs fades as timber decays and sediment fills in. Engineered FishHouse structure holds its shape and surface area, so the habitat value compounds rather than disappears. Better structure means a stronger, more resilient fishery for years to come.

The FishHouse is a modular, nature-based habitat structure built with Natrx's Dry Forming™ process. Its overhangs, internal voids, and layered textures mimic natural cover, giving fish shelter, ambush points, and refuge across every life stage. Beyond Rock and Riprap

Rock and riprap are yesterday's answer to fish habitat. Cheap by the ton, but a blunt instrument. Most of the material is solid mass that delivers little usable habitat, and the few voids it has tend to silt in over time. The FishHouse takes a precision-engineering approach. Each unit is custom-designed and produced with Natrx's patented Dry Forming™ advanced manufacturing, shaped to deliver complexity at every scale and a set of interconnected co-benefits at once: more living space, better water exchange, and a lighter footprint on the lakebed.

Two Decades of Work, One New First

Two Decades of Reef Building
The North Carolina Wildlife Federation installs roughly a dozen rock reefs across the lake over twenty years, including recent reefs at the Hager Creek and Ramsey Creek public fishing piers, and an annual Christmas tree reef program with the local Shrine Club.
2025
Grant, Approvals, and Quote
Habitat Enhancement Program grant funding is secured and Marine Commission approvals are facilitated for two new reefs at public-access sites. Natrx quotes 24 FishHouse modules each for the Lake Norman State Park pier and Beatty's Ford Access.
Early 2026
Manufacturing and Staging
FishHouse modules are produced with Natrx's Dry Forming™ process in Louisiana and shipped to North Carolina, staged at Skipper's Landing on Lake Norman ahead of installation.

First Freshwater FishHouse Reef Installed
Crews craned the modules from the Lancaster barge and set them in place at the Lake Norman State Park pier, arranged in a finger-fan layout with casting lanes and integrated with the existing Christmas tree reefs, and at Beatty's Ford Access. Divers guided each placement.

Natrx OS eDNA sampling and underwater footage will document what the new structure attracts, building a freshwater dataset that grows in value over time.

Built for the Whole Food Web

The FishHouse is engineered to do more than attract fish. Its complexity at every scale, from millimeter-fine texture to foot-scale voids, builds habitat for every level of the food web: the biofilms and algae that start the chain, the invertebrates and forage that feed on them, and the bass and crappie at the top. Where simpler reefs mainly aggregate the gamefish already in the lake, that comprehensive support is what makes the habitat substantial and long-lasting for the fishery as a whole. As the reef matures, Natrx OS eDNA sampling will track which species colonize the structure over time.

More Public-Access Reefs

The two-site model is built to repeat. Additional public fishing piers and access points around Lake Norman are candidates for the next round of habitat enhancement.

Ongoing eDNA Performance Monitoring

Natrx OS uses eDNA sampling to track which species colonize the reef and how the fishery responds over time, building a living freshwater dataset that compounds in value with every round of monitoring.

A Freshwater Reference Site

As the first freshwater FishHouse reef, Lake Norman becomes a reference for the field. Results here help anglers, agencies, and other lakes understand how advanced reef design performs in fresh water, and contribute to a growing body of artificial reef science.
